Coming up with the idea for the party
So now you've decided that you really want to host a party. Now the question is, what kind of party do you want to throw?
Who will be attending?
Some things to think about when you're considering what kind of party you want to have is, who do you want to invite? What kind of group is this? Are these your office coworkers or are these your best friends from high school, or college? Are these some newer friends that you don't know as well, or are these your family members or extended family? Just think about the group and the kinds of activities that you know that they'll enjoy.
For example, my mom does not like games. So I would never throw a party that she would be attending where the main activity is a game because I know that my mom would not enjoy that. Whereas my fiancé and his family love games. So that activity would be a perfect kind of party to throw with them. You just have to think about the kinds of things that your guests will enjoy.
What level of effort and time do you have to put into this party?
The second thing you need to think about is how much effort are you willing to put into this party? Are you planning on cooking a four course dinner? Are you just willing to make a few cocktails and have some people over? How much time do you really have to plan this party? Consider your time constraints before you over-commit to something that you're not quite prepared for.
What time of year is it?
The next thing that you need to think about is the seasons, the time of year, when you're trying to think about what kind of party you want to have. Is it the dead of winter, where you know that you should probably stay inside versus going outside? Or is this going to be summer and you just can't get enough of that beautiful sunshine? So think about what kind of party lends itself to the weather?
Also, what kinds of holidays are around this time of year? Is St Patrick's Day coming up? Or is Halloween right around the corner? And that could really dictate the kind of party that you throw.
Same thing with birthdays. If you have a friend with a birthday coming up why don't you use that as an opportunity to be a wonderful friend to them and throw them a party? Just things to think about when you're looking at the calendar.
What party would you want to be invited to?
Then the other thing that you might want to think about is what kind of party would you want to be invited to? So if somebody else was throwing this party what kind of party would you be so excited about to go to when you get that invitation?
Why don't you just take a few minutes and brainstorm some ideas. So just to get a piece of paper out and pen and start writing down. Anything that pops into your head like oh my gosh, wouldn't it be so cool if we could throw this kind of party or that kind of party? And I've never been to something like this before? Or hey, my best friend did this, like several years ago and everybody had fun. Why don't we bring that back?
Coming up…
And then from there, we'll go through all the details of planning it in specifics once you've decided on the kind of party that you want to throw.
Cheers!
